Boy dies in ATV Crash

Boy, 12 Dead After Losing Control of ATV
Sunday February 22, 2009

In National City, California a 12 year old boy died after he lost control of an all terrain vehicle and crashing into a wall. There are not many details that have been released on this accident yet as the boy just passed about 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Julio Lizarraga lived with his mother in the Encanto, California area.

The reason I choose this article is because this really makes me think about the age that children are able to drive motor vehicles like an ATV. Not only is this ATV, but also motorized vehicles like golf carts or four wheelers. I feel that in order for young adults to be able to drive these vehicles they need to have taken some short of safety course or else there needs to be some sort of law that required children to have a license to drive these vehicles. There are way too many accidents that involve young people and most result in deaths or serious injury. Children do not have enough knowledge to drive things like ATV’s or four wheelers.
Some states to have laws that prohibit children from driving ATV’s on roads but there is no nationwide law that restricts children from driving. Each state is different and I found a document from Kentucky and this is what their state laws are.

“Kentucky law is quite specific,” said Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmondson. “If you drive a motor-powered vehicle of any kind on a Kentucky road—including
subdivision roads—you must have a driver’s license.”

This means that anyone under the age of 16 cannot drive a scooter, ATV, moped, go-cart, golf cart, motorcycle, or any other motor-powered vehicle on any road in the state.

This is just one of the states in the US. Each state I am sure has some sort of law regarding this issue but I feel that each state should be the same. Also I feel that each state should be the same when it comes to young individuals getting their drivers license.

Police Have 'New Leads' in Disappearance of Missing Florida Girl Haleigh Cummings

Everyday there is something new that is coming out in this case. It just breaks my heart to keep hearing new evidence, yet they are not getting anywhere and they still have no found this beautiful little girl Haleigh Cummings.

Police said they have several new leads in the disappearance of a 5-year-old Florida girl after interviewing individuals they had missed during earlier sweeps of her neighborhood. Capt. Steve Rose, of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, declined to describe the information Tuesday in the case of Haleigh Cummings. "We were able to come up with several good leads that we are following up on today," Rose told reporters. "At this time we cannot discuss the nature of those leads." Rose said police did a second neighborhood canvass Monday evening and got more information from people they hadn't previously talked to. They also set up a vehicle checkpoint."It's possible those are people we missed the first time — new people, new information," Rose said. "We’re still looking at everybody as a suspect at this time."
I have such a huge love for children and I have spend most of my life around young children as well. I do a lot of nannying and babysitting and I just got understand how that girl could not have work up to someone in the house or the girl making even making a fight. Also it upsets me to think that the story of the dad and his so called girlfriend keeps changing about who was sleeping where.

Police had never been called to the home in the past, but there have been investigations by a social services agency involving Cummings, Croslin and Haleigh and her 4-year-old brother Junior, according to Rose. He hasn't revealed the nature of those cases.
The Florida Department of Children and Families confirmed that the agency "was involved with the family," but wouldn't disclose details, citing confidentiality laws.
In addition to Croslin and Cummings, the child's mother, Crystal Sheffield, also has been questioned in the case.

This story makes me so upset and it’s so hard for me to understand. When I see the story all I can stay to myself is WHY or HOW. This little girl is so innocent and she has lived such a short life and now she is going through this along with her family.

Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs
Before I was a Business Education and Business Administration I was considering the psychology side of the medical field. I have always been very interested in new things happening in the medical field so when I found this article I was very interested. I will list each of the breakthroughs and talk about them a little as well. Also I have link facts that I found about each breakthrough from other sites.
#1. Circumcision Can Prevent HIV
In December 2006, the National Institutes of Health halted two clinical trials of male circumcision after an early review of the data showed that the procedure dramatically reduced transmission of HIV.
I think this is a great thing because HIV is becoming more and more common now days and we need to find ways that we can prevent it from spending and this is one way that we can start. Why not start at a young age for boys?

#2. Test for Metastatic Breast Cancer
Surgeons now have a faster way to assess whether breast cancer has spread, thanks to the FDA's approval of the first molecular test to detect metastatic breast cancer. During the patient's lumpectomy or mastectomy, surgeons traditionally examine the lymph node closest to the breast.
I am always been interested in new breakthrough for breast cancer because I know many people who had suffered from this and I lost a very close cousin to this as well. I think women need to be offer of how important it is to go in for annual exams.

#3. First Human Vaccine Against Bird Flu
In 2007 the threat of a pandemic avian flu got a teensy bit less scary. The deadly disease has killed 207 people worldwide and infected 336 since 2003. While only a small number of those cases were traced to human-to-human transmission, public health officials fear it's only a matter of time before the virus mutates into a more easily transmitted form and sparks a global outbreak. This year the FDA approved the first human vaccine against the bird flu.
I am still learning about how serious this actually is. I have never heard of anyone that I know of with this. It sounds like if someone was to get this that it would be very serious as well.

#4. Help for Dieters: Alli Need help shedding those extra holiday pounds? Overweight adults now have an extra weapon against fat: Alli, the first FDA-approved weight-loss drug sold over the counter. Alli (a.k.a. orlistat) works by monkeying with lipase, an enzyme the body uses to break down and digest the fat in food.
My uncle took this and he did lose a lot of weight. I know there was certain foods that he stayed away from because the of effect that it had on his body when the food mixed with the drug.

#5. New Diabetes Genes
Having a parent with type 2 diabetes ups your odds of developing the disease, but why do some sibs get it and others don't? The answer lies somewhere in your genetic code, and this year brought scientific sleuths closer to cracking it.
I am learning more and more about diabetes as the years go on. One of my close friends 5 year old daughter was just diagnosed with diabetes and they are struggling to keep it under control but they are learning quickly and how food have effects on her body.

#6. No More Periods
Women wanting to dodge the nuisance of their monthly menses can now turn to Lybrel, the first continuous use birth control drug approved by the FDA.
Any women would love this. To take this away each month would also take away those unwanted craving we get and the uncomfortable feelings as well.

7. Relief from Fibromyalgia: Lyrica
People who suffer from the chronic fatigue, muscle pain, and stiffness of fibromyalgia finally have a drug to call their own. This year the FDA approved the antiseizure drug Lyrica (pregabalin), made by Pfizer, as a treatment for fibromyalgia.

#8. Early-Stage Test for Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in America and is responsible for more deaths than the next three most common cancers combined (colon, breast, and prostate). One reason lung cancer is so deadly is that by the time tumors are diagnosed, usually as a result of physical symptoms like coughing up blood, the cancer is often advanced and tough to treat.

#9. New Source of Stem Cells
This was a banner year for stem-cell research. But one advancement that may not have had its due was the discovery of stem cells in amniotic fluid. Researchers believe that amniotic fluid–derived stem cells, AFS for short, have the potential to give rise to many, but perhaps not all, of the 220 specialized cell types found in the human body — placing the potential usefulness of AFS cells somewhere between embryonic and adult stem cells.

#10. Benefits of Vitamin D
Researchers have long known that the "sunshine vitamin" boosts bone strength by encouraging the body to absorb calcium. But a slew of new studies published in 2007 suggests that the vitamin has a lot of other benefits: Diets high in D may ward off diabetes, gum disease and multiple sclerosis — and maybe even cancer. Though some findings linking vitamin D and cancer showed questionable benefit, the news on colon cancer was promising.
I love to lie in the tanning bed in the winter and in the summer I could spend the entire day outside in the sun. Just like anything else there are always pros and cons to everything and this is also one of those things.

Overview
I felt this article is very beneficial to anyone who is interested in new medical research and anyone who may be affected by one of these top 10 breakthroughs as well. There are also many links that I have added to other sites that give more info on each topic. I been very interested in these topics that I have been doing a lot of reading on the different findings for all of these. I think medical breakthroughs have come so far over the years, who knows what it will be like five or ten years from now or even if you think about it even just a year from now.

Publicity Electricity

Publicity Electricity: How to Plug Your Business Into The Media?

By: Todd Brabender

What business doesn’t want the best publicity that they can get? I found this article to be very interesting because I am in the business field. This is a great resource that I can show my students some day that will help them understand how important it is to make sure we are getting positive media exposure for our business. This quote from the article is so true and I wanted to share it with everyone who hasn’t yet had the chance to read this great article.

“The key to “seeing the light” is knowing how to generate your own “publicity electricity” and plugging yourself into multiple outlets – media outlets that is.”

There are many keys to making sure that a company has great publicity some sources are magazines, newspapers, TV, radio or the increasingly popular online news outlets, and media sources. Each and every business in the world has at least one element of it that is newsworthy. It just requires you to fire up that publicity generator and shine some light on it for the media to see.

There are many different places the publicity comes from. Some businesses choose to do campaigns to promote their products. Others might choose media outlets, case studies, or just show reporters how the business you work for is positively affected your clients and how it can provide benefits for everyone. Every business is going to take a different approach and that is what needs to be done. The same process is not going to work for all business. One other bit of advice that I felt was good from the article is, “I’m sure you’ll find that once you generate your best “publicity electricity” -- you will be “shocked” at the interest you can generate.”
